Hello everyone...I'm too lazy to write like 20 different e-mails, so this is the substitute for a long-winded Colorado mass mailing. I apologize if it contains content that is nonsensical to you, but it might be somewhat entertaining so suck it up. I'll try to include something of interest for everyone.
Some random observations from this past week:
1. So yeah, I was fortunate enough to find an apartment pretty much the first day I arrived here. It's a fairly spacious one bedroom for $515 a month and includes everything but electricity...pretty hot deal compared to the places I've had before I think. The condition is very nice, with fresh new carpeting and appliances and everything. The maintenance guy did let it slip that the previous occupant was a convicted drug dealer who is now in jail. My mom was freaking out because she thought that this guy would eventually bust out and try to break my door down to recover his stuff or something, but we were assured that the lock was changed. I guess they just switch locks with other rooms, so someone else might be getting an unexpected visit. Bah, I'm not afraid of drug dealers. I'm sure many of them are very nice people.
2. I was driving down one of the main roads here and I passed a Chuck E. Cheese. Taking a quick glance at the tall looming sign in the parking lot, I noticed that the mouse was wearing a red hat with a big yellow star in the middle. I of course immediately pulled over, entered the building, and shook the hand of my rodent Comrade. (not not really)
3. We had a big raffle here during orientation and instead of winning something cool like a gift certificate or a sweatshirt, I ended up winning this stupid Redken 5th Avenue NYC for Men daily invigorating shampoo along with a container of styling wax. The packaging has some chumpish male model type on it and I was none too pleased to have to walk up there and pick that up.
4. I was hoping that this place would have a Staples nearby, but alas, my price matching options are exactly the same as they were in Colorado. Best Buy, Circuit City, Office Max, Office Depot, and CompUSA deals will still apply fortunately.
5. So I was in CPR class the other day and the girl who was training us prompted us to start rescue breathing on the mannequins with that lame Ben Stiller "Do it...Do it..." thing. Even stranger was that everyone seemed to love it. Am I missing something?
6. I have a bed now. It's marginally more comfortable than the floor.
7. There was an Outback Steakhouse directly next to the hotel my mom was staying at, and we ended up eating there twice. I know someone reading this is probably shaking his head in disgust right now, but there was nothing I could do.
8. There's some guy in my class that looks almost exactly like Dean (not the guy from Gilmore Girls).
9. Oh and in case anyone was wondering, it took me about 15 and a half hours to get here, all in one big chunk. I think it was a little over 1000 miles. Wasn't that bad...definitely the way I'll be doing it in the future. Keith is a driving genius. That man is wise.
10. According to my freshman facts book, there's some guy, Mike Harris, in my class that was born in 79 and majored in Psychology at Carleton College...maybe someone might find that interesting.
11. I don't get CBS or the WB with my rabbit ears. And get this...there's this big building a block from my apartment with that big CBS eye plastered on it. How hacked out is that?
12. I've yet to find any good record stores yet. Makes me want to cry. Went into some place called Recordhead the other day, but they only had two shelves of used CD's. The rest of the store was taken up by used VHS tapes, DVDs, and video games. They were selling Intellevision stuff and some old Atari 2600 games, so if you're ever in the market for anything of that nature, let me know.
13. They apparently have some new place in Green Bay where they hold poker tournaments of all kinds and all limits every evening. Surprisingly, I heard about it on the radio. Might have to go check it out. By the way, everyone should check out the newly opened
howardlederer.com.
14. Due to a quality recommendation from Curtis, I picked up a box of Reese's Puffs on sale at Pick and Save the other day. Pretty tasty cereal. Kind of like a mix between Coco Puffs and Peanut Butter Captain Crunch, though I think the puffs are slightly softer than both of those cereals. I'll definitely pick up more in the future. Might try it with whole chocolate milk tomorrow for an extra healthy breakfast.
15. That Olympic commercial with Ronald McDonald swimming in that pool is really weird.
16. It is May and it is Esrom's birthday. His whole happy extended family is here for the party. Everyone is eating cake, laughing, dancing and having a good time. When Esrom eats cake, he eats it with his hands and gets frosting all over his face. I hope he can blow out his candles!
17. According to
bawls.com, there are 28 stores in Wisconsin that sell Bawls. People who choose coffee as a study aid over the official drink of the Cyberathlete Professional League are making a big mistake.
18. I met some guy in my class who's from Aurora, CO. He went to Regis though, so he'll never be a part of the APS brotherhood.
19. Thanks to everyone who hooked me up with some good loot before I left. The Fruit Roll-Ups and Gushers are already gone.
20. I don't know anything about art, but the art museum here seemed decent. They had this limited time selection of landscape paintings by some guy Tom Uttech. The thing that stood out about this collection was that every other painting seemed to have a standing bear in it. This guy was totally obsessed with bears. I think I counted 22 total paintings with some kind of upright bear in it, either in a pool in front of a waterfall, leaning against a tree, or just kind of chillin' in front of some brush.
21. And lastly, I sold out today. Stopped by Gamestop and dropped $175 of my last real BCH paycheck on a used PS2, a dance pad, and DDRMax2. God help me. Now I can play without getting my ass handed to me by a bunch of DDR veterans.
